TIP: installation of USB driver on Win98 (Unitor, AMT8, MT4)

Hi everyone,

After going through some trouble during the installation of the USB
driver, I wanted to share this tip on how to install it.

When connecting the USB device (AMT8, Unitor, MT4) Windows will try to
install 3 different drivers. At that time, just let Windows search for a
driver. It most likely won't find one. Just click "next" all the time
and _don't_ point to the Emagic drivers. Go through the procedure and in
the end, 3 unknown devices will be recognised in the device manager. If
Windows asks for a reboot, just do so.

Step 2: Go to "USB controllers" in device manager. There you see "USB
Composite Device". Doubleclick it and reinstall the driver: this is
where you point to the Emagic drivers. So, you point to the directory
where the Emagic drivers reside and you follow Windows' instructions.
After you installed this driver, Windows will ask for a reboot. Do so.
While booting Win98 again, Windows will now automatically install all
other drivers and all the unknown devices will be gone.

Step 3: Go to the device manager again and doubleclick the Emagic midi
device in the "controller for games, audio,...." If you have two
Unitor's stacked, then make sure you have 16 Inputs and 16 Outputs
instead of 8 etc. (yes, only one driver is necessary for all stacked
devices). Problem: if you open an old song in Logic, you'll see that the
midi ports are not correct anymore because the new midi ports have "USB"
in their name. There's a simple fix: in the driver (in device manager)
of your Emagic device, you can rename the ports. Rename them to the
original name... which will mostly likely be the name which is given
there without "USB".

Note: if you had the serial driver installed before going to USB, then
first delete this serial driver before installing the USB driver.

Let's hope it works for everyone.

-> Thanks to Clayton Workman for pointing me in the right direction!!!!
Much appreciated!

Greetings,
Joeri

Are you sure this is required? We never had to perform such detours.
Which firmware version does your Unitor8 MkII have (You see the
firmware in the Special Parameters area in Unitor8 Control.)

This is a "workaround" for the problem that Logic does not remember
the port name enumeration. It will not work in any case. Of course it
is possible to use one or more Unitor8/AMT8 connected to a COM port
and one or more Unitor8/AMT8 connected to USB at the same time.
Removing the COM port driver only retains the same port enumeration
when moving from COM port to USB.
