Discussion:
Roland JD-800 as a Controller?

I am in the process of moving and need to downsize my studio. I'm
using Logic Pro 7 and an M-Audio Radium 61 controller.

I have a Roland JD-800 and thought I might sell it...then it occurred
to me that perhaps all those sliders and controls might be a good thing
after all - using the JD-800 as a controller for the whole set-up.

Does anyone know if this is possible? If so, will I need a degree from
MIT to make it work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Why don't you try it and let *us* know : )

Open a Logic synth, click on a parameter control, go into preferences
under control surfaces, and use the learn function and assign a slider
or knob to the parameter.

If your MIDI is set up properly you should have no problem assigning a
bunch of the JD's knobs and sliders to Logic parameters...

I doubt it'll work. I don't think the faders send out midi. Check
that first: do you see any midi information being transmitted?

Um even the Juno 106 sent out Sysex data with its sliders.. I seriously
doubt Roland would have left this out of the even newer JD800..

Worst case scenario, it sends out Sysex data, which means you can at
least record tweaks on the synth itself in Logic, but it wont work as a
standard Midi Controller. If this is the case, perhaps you can make some
sort of Transformer in the Environment though to take care of this and
use it..

Have you checked out the roland site? I was sure I came across an
update or something that would let it act like a PCR type device. You
might want to look in the support area at the Rolandweb site for an
answer.

Thanks for sending me to the Roland site, George.
Here's what I found...almost sounds too easy:

Product: JD-800

The JD-800 sliders can be set to send MIDI messages that can be
recorded into
your sequencer. When adjusting a selected parameter such as cutoff,
resonance,
panning, etc., the JD-800 transmits a series of system exclusive
messages. Use
the following procedure to enable the Transmit Edit function:

1) Press MIDI.
2) Use the CURSOR UP/DOWN buttons to select "TX Edit Data."
3) Press the INC (increment) button to turn this parameter ON.

NOTE: You will need to enable this transmit function each time you
turn the
JD-800 on

And one more ever-running device with a taped power switch, this time
for software reasons :-)

Perhaps my message was lost.

The JD-800 transmits SYSEX midi when the TX Edit Data setting is enabled.
It is mostly designed to edit the settings in a JD-990 or other JD-800,
which can understand the SYSEX and use it to edit programs, waveform
selections, etc. Since it does not send the standard MIDI messages, but
rather the proprietary and long System Exclusive MIDI messages, it just
can't be reasonably used as a performance device with Logic. Even if you
manage to translate the SYSEX to MIDI controller messages, the bottlenecks
and timing delays will render it practically useless.

That said, I love the synth all the same as I mentioned... Hope this helps.

My point is- it's such an easy thing to try- might be worth it to
simply *do* it and see what the results are. Asking about it here is a
great idea, but I'm the type to just try something if I want something
to work in a certain way...

Subject: [LUG] Roland JD-800 as a Controller?

It's the dream of myself and anyone who ever owned one, no? The unfortunate
news is that the JD-800 uses SYSEX for all those sliders. Meaning, you'll
need to not only map the system exclusive midi messages to the destination
controller numbers, but in the end...its not even a realistic option since
the sysex seems so verbose -- Any quick or multiple movements and you'll
bottleneck the interface and target device. I use an X-Station 49 with
Logic now for my controlling and it works much better.

Fortunately, you can use all the sliders with a JD-990 -- since it's
basically a JD-800 x 2. But alas that doesn't help the downsizing effort.
I've thought of selling my JD-800 many times, but those sliders and orange
buttons get me every time. Perhaps think twice before you finally put it up
on Ebay -- they are pretty rare.
